Braces vs. Clear Aligners: A No-Pressure Guide for Real Families

Both work. The right one depends on the case, the person wearing them, and how likely they are to remember to put the trays back in. Here’s how we help patients decide.
Clear aligners, in plain English
Nearly invisible plastic trays you swap out every one to two weeks. Perfect for teens and adults with mild to moderate crowding, spacing, or a smile they’d like a little straighter. You take them out to eat, brush, and (be honest) for the occasional wedding photo. Average treatment: 6 to 18 months.
Traditional braces, in plain English
Small brackets and wires that we adjust every six to eight weeks. Still the gold standard for complex bite corrections, big rotations, and younger kids whose teeth are shifting fast. Modern brackets are smaller and much less noticeable than what your parents wore, and ceramic (tooth-colored) options exist if you want a subtler look.
Choosing the right one for your family
- Kids under 12: usually braces, sometimes with an early expander.
- Teens: aligners work great if they’ll wear them 22 hours a day. If we know they won’t, braces are more forgiving.
- Adults: aligners nine times out of ten — for the aesthetics and because you can take them out for meetings.
- Complex bites: braces, often paired with elastics.
